Spread Your Wings and Fly Review
At first glance, Spread Your Wings and Fly, written and illustrated by Nonono Yamada, is a story about a desire to reach the sky — but at its core, the KUMA title explores copious themes of passion, ambition, self-doubt, discovery, and even the complexities of human relationships. Here’s what makes this one a compelling read.
Plot
The plot centers on Chikara, a university student working hard on his research to achieve his lonfterm dream of flight. One night, he stumbles upon Satomi, a new transfer student whose flawless appearance and intelligence captivate him. This passing (and steamy) encounter ignites a deep connection between them, and they quickly grow closer. However, when their bond begins to deepen, a hard-to-read aspect of Satomi's persona emerges, challenging Chikara's perceptions.
As the story unfolds, Chikara is forced to navigate his feelings and potential obstacles pertaining to a relationship with Satomi, leading to a tale that delves into darkness, hope, and most important of all, rebirth. And by the end, there’s something truly special worth savoring from this blossoming relationship. Clear skies are on the horizon!
Characters
Chikara is a hardworking and ambitious university student whose dedication to his research stems from his childhood dream of flight. It keeps him motivated, and very much focused on work. His encounter with Satomi ignites a rare romantic spark, but he must also grapple with the unfamiliar terrain of Satomi's personality — and how the potential pairing could essentially lead to something brand new.
Satomi, the enigmatic (and initially, stoic) transfer student, possesses both beauty and intellect, making him a captivating and complex character. However, his own internalized fears have become his biggest hurdle in finding happiness. Their freshly explored relationship is marked by a delicate balance of curiosity and caution as they uncover each other's comfort levels and attempt to open up. Still, the growing commitment between Chikara and Satomi is probably the most endearing aspect of the story, showcasing their great interpersonal dynamic and mutual infatuation.
Art
Yamada's art style is entirely impressive, offering detailed illustrations that effectively convey the nuances of the duo’s emotions and the fresh dynamic of their relationship. These moments are often enhanced by the title’s classic, charming BL aesthetics.
Even though its depiction of robotics and aerodynamics is merely a subplot in this passionate love story, it’s also noteworthy, with Yamada's technical details adding authenticity to the backdrop. The artistic representation of flight and machinery further complements the unique narrative, making the scientific elements accessible and engaging to readers. But overall, the scenes depicting introspective revelations and vulnerability are where the art reaches its full potential.
Themes and Symbolism
The manga explores several themes, including discovery (both internal and external), and the complexities of human relationships. For example, the dynamic between Chikara and Satomi highlights the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone, only made possible by their growing mutual respect and understanding. It takes a certain level of trust to break down one’s walls, and this title makes a solid effort to create that opportunity for both characters.
The symbolism of flight and regeneration underscores the characters' journey toward self-discovery and growth; perfectly represented by Satomi’s phoenix tattoo, the catalyst of their initial interaction. When it reaches its compelling final moments, the title fully embraces its symbolic nature and thematic intentions to develop a pristine conclusion.
Verdict
Overall, Spread Your Wings and Fly is a well-crafted title with strong pacing, compelling characters, and everything you could want from a one-shot BL manga. In addition to print, readers can also check out KUMA’s new digital storefront for Spread Your Wings and Fly — and many more.
