Brave Bang Bravern!

After making its grand debut in early 2024, the 12-episode anime series Brave Bang Bravern! has made a remarkable contribution to the expansive world of anime, offering the mecha genre a fresh, non-conformist perspective in a space often dominated by traditional depictions of overt masculinity.

Set in a futuristic society teetering on the brink of collapse, the series chronicles the journey of Isami Ao, a Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces soldier, alongside Lewis Smith, a soldier in the US Marine Corps. Almost instantly, the two are thrust into an extraordinary world of mecha warfare after a mysterious and formidable enemy invades their training location. As hope dwindles, a talking robot named Bravern then appears and asks Isami to pilot him into battle, revealing that these deadly invaders are super robots powered by human pilots. And from there, things only get crazier

From its first few moments, Brave Bang Bravern! quickly distinguishes itself through its ability to create two iconic leading characters who entertain and inspire through their open-minded commentary on topics such as gender norms, friendship, and to some extent, the capacity for love—all while embracing the classic shonen blueprint. Nobuhiro Takenaka, Executive Producer of the series and President of CygamesPictures, expressed his enthusiasm for this unique, emotionally rich project, stating, "Bravern being an original series gave animators and actors the leeway to bring their own visions of the characters to life, resulting in characters whose expressiveness surpassed the imaginations of even those who created them." He continues, "Seeing these characters who cried and screamed with a raw power that shattered all expectations, I found myself feeling as if I was watching an entirely new and pleasantly unfamiliar work as the series neared completion."

Despite its riveting emotional arcs, action-packed backdrop, hilarious meta-commentary, and mecha roots, Brave Bang Bravern!’s biggest strength ultimately lies in its ability to highlight the popular and profound bond between Isami and Lewis. And in many ways, the series' unique and well-rounded portrayal of the nuanced friendship further proves that its creative team was unafraid to push the outdated boundaries of masculinity—deeply resonating with viewers regardless of their interpretation of the rare partnership.

The team acknowledges the importance of this incomparable connection and how it effectively helped them reach their full narrative potential, with Takenaka noting that the duo’s dynamic, "was a core theme we wanted to portray from the very beginning." He continues, "In that sense, I think the reception we got [for the series] shows that we accomplished what we set out to do. I myself was moved to tears by the two lead actors’ performances at times, so I’m glad those emotions reached a wider audience as well."

As the series pivots from its often comedic persona and soars into its final arc to adequately test the bond between Isami and Lewis, the weight of life and death takes center stage after Lewis loses his life during a grueling battle, only to be miraculously reborn as Bravern. This late, well-placed reveal introduces a brand-new perspective that changes the context of the plot entirely. Fortunately, by the time the dust settles, this full-circle revelation provides an emotionally charged, character-driven climax to the series, while impressively generating tangible tension and comprehensive growth for the duo.

Reflecting on his favorite scenes from that particular chapter, Takenaka shares, "Every scene has a fond place in my heart, but if I had to name just one, it would be the transformation into Bravern scene in episode nine. Episode nine relates how the entire series begins, marking a crucial juncture in the 12-episode plot and a piece of storytelling that really lent the series its originality." Due to this foundation-shifting moment, Brave Bang Bravern! then segues into a masterful conclusion that embodies the power of visual storytelling and a well-crafted plot, leaving a lasting impression for its heart, humor, and intensity—also ensuring that the story's emotional core remains with its audience long after the final episode.

Still, nothing would be possible without the team’s shared passion and collaborative spirit, which played a significant role in bringing Brave Bang Bravern! to life, as one might expect from a complexly produced project of this caliber. Takenaka explains, "It isn’t really unique [to this title] per se, but the team shared a strong sense of unity, owing in large part to the director’s positive personality. The passion exuded by the anime is a manifestation of the entire team’s passion, and the result of everyone fighting hard right up until each deadline."

This camaraderie and shared vision are evident in every frame of the series, regularly pushing animation boundaries alongside its exceptionally written characters. As a matter of fact, within just a year, the enduring (and inclusive) impact of Brave Bang Bravern! has managed to open the door for a broader audience to appreciate the depth of mecha anime, similar to other influential titles that also paved the way including Mobile Suit Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion

When reflecting on its growing popularity, Takenaka expresses his pride in the series' distinctive contribution to the popular genre space, saying, "We wanted to create a series that viewers who weren’t already fans of the genre could enjoy as well. Judging by how female fans and people of all ages would show up to our events, I think we accomplished that initial goal to some extent. I hope that after watching our series, those new fans will go on to experience the wealth of mecha anime that preceded it."

Given the success of the series on all fronts—can we expect more chapters at some point? While nothing is confirmed, the team remains cautiously optimistic about Brave Bang Bravern!, with Takenaka admitting, "There’s no telling what the future will bring. All it takes is a little bravery and a bang to open up any door. The only question is what you and I will wish for."

In the meantime, as the series continues to inspire and captivate audiences from all walks of life, it's clear that the 12-episode run of Brave Bang Bravern! has already broken several barriers while setting a bold new standard for the genre.
